Wat Phnom

The temple of Wat Phnom is set on top of a hill located at the centre of the city, and among the abundance of Buddhist temples in Cambodia, this is one that tourists should consider visiting. Fun fact: If you directly translate the name of the capital, Phnom Penh, it would mean Penh’s Hill. Penh was a wealthy woman who lived in Cambodia, and her name, together with this site, gave rise to the name of the capital of Cambodia. There is also a museum attached to this temple!

Opening hours: 8.00am – 6.00pm

Entrance fee: USD$1, add in another USD$2 for the museum (Approximately KHR4,037, and another KHR8,074 for the museum)

Tip1: As this is a temple, it is advisable to dress decently.

Tip2: Watch out for the monkeys in the surroundings!

Tip3: Be mindful of your belongings, as there might be pickpockets around the area.

Tip4: There might be some vendors and beggars around.

Tip5: There are people around that sell birds in cages for the buyers to set them free, but most of the time the birds have already been trained to return. So beware!

Wat Ounalom

Wat Ounalom is the centre for Cambodian Buddhism, and was first built to preserve what was believed to be the eyebrow of Buddha. Because of the destruction caused by the war, however, this temple has undergone many renovations. During your visit here, you might even be able to catch sight of the monks residing here!

Tip1: As this is a temple, it is advisable to dress decently.

Tip2: Compared to Wat Phnom, this temple is less crowded, thus it will appear to be more peaceful.

Silver Pagoda

Silver Pagoda would probably be one of the grandest temples that you’ve ever seen. Some parts of the temple floor are made up of silver tiles, hence the name of the temple. Besides that, the Buddha statues here are definitely the main attraction, with one of it being a life-sized Buddha made of solid gold and diamonds.

Tip1: As this is a temple, it is advisable to dress decently.

Tip2: This temple is a part of the Royal Palace and the entrance fee actually covers for both attractions.

Tip3: You will have to remove your shoes before entering the temple.

Royal Palace

The royal palace is a complex of buildings where the king of Cambodia resides. Most parts of this palace are open to the public, and this collection of buildings should be visited especially by those who are enthusiastic about architecture.

Tip1: As the Silver Pagoda is part of the Royal Palace, the entrance fee covers both attractions.

Tip2: It is better to dress decently to this venue!

Independence Monument

This Independence Monument was built to commemorate the independence of Cambodia from France. During their national holidays, this place becomes the centre of activities, making it an incredibly happening spot in the city of Phnom Penh.

Tip: Try coming here at night, as the lighting will make the monument look even more spectacular.

Phnom Chisor Temple

Phnom Chisor is a mountain approximately 50 to 70 kilometres away from the city of Phnom Penh. At the top of the hill is the Phnom Chisor Temple, a Khmer temple built during the Angkorian era, giving it its significant historical value.

Tip1: Be prepared for some climbing! Although it might leave you feeling exhausted, the view at the top of the hill will definitely make it worthwhile.

Tip2: Do wear comfortable clothing that is suitable for mountain climbing.

Tip3: You might want to do it early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the afternoon heat.

Tip4: Remember to bring your own water bottle to stay hydrated!

Siem Reap

Angkor Wat is one of the main attractions of Cambodia, located in Siem Reap, attracting many tourists to the country. It is also listed as one of the seven wonders of the world. So, during your trip here to Cambodia, this is one of the spot that you absolutely have to visit, as it will definitely be one bewildering experience. While you’re at it, you can also visit some other nearby temples that are just as spectacular.

Tip1: Angkor Thom and Bayon Temple are approximately 10 - 11 minutes by car from Angkor Wat.

Tip2: And, the Bayon Temple and Angkor Thom are only 5 minutes walk away from each other!

Catching a boat to Siem Reap could be a nice way of travelling as you get to have a view of the waters and the countryside along the way there. The boat station is located near Sisowath Quay.

Tip1: Catch the boat only during the wet season as the water levels are too low during the dry season.

Tip2: It is always a good idea to get the tickets in advance.

Buses are the cheapest alternative option, and you also get to enjoy the view of the countryside on your way to Siem Reap. One of the largest stations is the one next to Central Market. However, depending on the bus companies, they will depart from different locations, so be sure to check it beforehand!

Shared taxi is something unique. It is what it sounds like, where you will be sharing a taxi with other people.

Tip1: If there are many customers, the backseat will be really packed!
